Evolving from a somewhat niche sport to a popular activity at parks, disc golf has certainly taken off in the past decade. Combining the fun of throwing a frisbee with the strategics (and frustration) of golf, the sport is simple to learn, fun, and much cheaper than actual golf. It’s a fun sport to get into, but where do you go in metro Detroit to get some gear? Where can you play? How can you stay updated on any leagues or tournaments in the area? We have the answers to those questions in this guide to disc golf in metro Detroit.

Where to get your gear

You can find gear at almost any sporting goods store, but if you’re looking for a store dedicated to disc golf that happens to have the widest selection in the area, check out The Throw Shop in Ypsilanti. The largest disc golf pro shop in Michigan not only has all the gear you’ll need to start out, but they also offer professional advice with a staff that has over 75 years of experience in the sport. Best of all, the store is near a free 30-hole course so you can try your gear immediately after purchasing.

Where to go for beginners

So after you get your gear and are ready to hit the course, where can you go to practice your game? There’s plenty of courses popping up in the metro Detroit area, but Firefighters Park in Troy is great for beginners. The 18-hole course offers a variety of challenges for a disc golfer, whether it’s your long game or accuracy you want to work on. Other good beginner courses include Raintree Park in Troy, Herman Brys Park in St. Clair Shores, and Starr-Jaycee Park in Royal Oak.

Where to up your game

After you’ve mastered some of the easier courses in the area, you should try parks like Wagner Park in Royal Oak, Stoney Creek Metropark, or Freedom Park in Canton to elevate your game. Wagner Park is known for their tricky pin placement, Stoney Creek’s Buckhorn Disc Golf Course is a 27-hole championship course, and Freedom Park is a short course that gives players the opportunity to practice multiple times with the pins. All three are challenging courses and are a great way to up your disc golfing game.
